My Grandson Mason LOVES Dinosaurs – so even though it was a rainy day yesterday we headed out to search for places to play in nature with dinosaurs. And we found them! If you have ever been to Chicago, you have likely seen the Field Museum. And if you are a dinosaur fan that is ground zero for dinosaur hunting. If you want to prepare you can go to the Field Museum Website and even text with a Dino to get ready!
We went with the intent of seeing SUE the giant T Rex fossil that is at the Field Museum. SUE is the most complete T Rex that has ever been found. The Field Museum has just recently finished a renovation that gave Dinosaurs a new wing of the museum with bigger, newer exhibits and some great technology to play with. Mason loved the interactive displays that allowed him to touch a screen and with his finger turn the dinosaur around in circles.
Another thing about Mason, who is almost 5. He loves to take photos. (Guess what he is getting for his birthday?) So many of these photos were taken by him. It is fun to watch him document his experience and it allows me to see what he is really interested in!
The new T Rex exhibit is fabulous! It has a set of screens that are separated but create one full screen. For those who might be hearing impaired the words being spoken are shown on the wall above SUE. When they tell you about a bone or part of SUE they highlight it with a color. VERY well done!
Mason also loved the places he could see just how big a T Rex was. A docent showed him a tooth that was as big as Mason’s arm!
He got to stand in the actual footprint of a dinosaur, stand under the wing of a flying dinosaur and see just how big the bone was vs Grandpa’s wingspan.
If you are in Chicago for any reason I highly recommend the Field Museum! Whether adults, families with children or seniors there is definitely something for every one!
Right now there is an amazing exhibit from London called the Wildlife Photographer of the Year. AMAZING photos!
So whether in search of Dinosaurs, photos or spectacular indoor displays of other kinds please keep the Field Museum in mind if you are in or around Chicagoland!
